Your Mind Is a Garden

Dr. Seuss has a way with words, doesn't he?

They are fun, whimsical, a little silly even.

But much of the time, they also have a lesson in them.

This is one of my favorites.

"Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are seeds. You can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds."

So true.

We were walking along Lake Michigan this weekend, and it was a glorious summer day.

The sun was brilliant, the clouds almost surreal.

And under our feet, along the paved walkway, was a whole lot of goose poop.

I thought about how some people would focus on that.

They'd complain about the poop, or the wrapper on the ground that didn't quite make it to the garbage can.

All the while missing the beauty of the world around them.

The irony is that the more you focus on the bad stuff, the more of it you see.

When you look for reasons to be annoyed, disappointed, or frustrated, your brain becomes very good at finding them.

But when you look for beauty, kindness, laughter, and gratitude, you'll find those too.

I'm a firm believer that if you take time every day to notice the good things in life, you will rewire your brain to see those things first.

You'll smile more. Worry less. Appreciate your life in a deeper way.

All because you shifted your focus.

Pause for a minute and look around you.

• Find one thing in your home that makes you happy.

• Reflect on an accomplishment that made you smile this week.

• Watch an uplifting video.

• Call a friend and tell them you're grateful for them.

Your thoughts are seeds.

You can grow your flowers, or you can grow weeds.
