Off-Kilter

We spent the weekend in Galena, Illinois, enjoying the fall weather and celebrating our 3-year anniversary.

It's a quaint little town, with a very interesting (even slightly spooky) history and a lot of old, historic buildings.

We stayed at the oldest hotel in the city.

The parking garage was a little scary, with tight curves and wacky, narrow ramps.

From the outside, it looks like the ramp might be caving in on itself.

The floors in our hotel were extremely uneven, with little hills and valleys and dips everywhere.

Our bathroom floor was so slanted that you could drop a marble and it would roll down to the corner!

The streets are on an incline too, with huge sets of stairs going up to the level above the main drag.

Really cool to look at, but everything there was just slightly off-kilter.

Don't get me wrong, we had a fun time and enjoyed our adventure, but I spent the first day or so of our weekend feeling slightly queasy.

By the second day, I think my body started to orient itself. The nausea went away and I felt more like myself.

Funny how our bodies can adjust, isn't it?

Makes me think about life, as most of my adventures do.

We have an amazing ability to power through the stuff that tips us sideways, knocks us off balance, and makes us want to throw up.

And we find a way to smile through it all.

Because that comes with being human.

Things aren't always going to be level and peaceful.

Life is going to throw us curves and slanted floors and uneven streets.

We just need to give ourselves a little time to adjust.
