Just Because

It's that time of year in Wisconsin.

Yesterday, we got about 4 inches of snow and ended up shoveling the driveway a couple of times.

My youngest son is still home from college, and he was helping shovel with me.

I was busy in the driveway, listening to my audiobook and pushing snow out of the way.

He was working on the sidewalks.

From time to time, I'd look up and see him out of the corner of my eye and smile.

He's so tall now, like an actual, legitimate adult. That still blows my mind.

After a few minutes, I realized I couldn't see him anymore. He wasn't on the sidewalk in front of our house.

I know he hadn't walked past me into the house. I wouldn't have missed that.

And then I spotted him.

At the end of the sidewalk, in front of our neighbor's house.

He was shoveling their sidewalk, too!

Not because anyone asked him to do it.

Not because he was getting paid to do it.

Just because he could and because it was a nice thing to do for other people.

I'm telling you friends, these are the things that make a mom's heart swell so much it could burst.

I'm not saying he's perfect, or altruistic or is always giving to others.

He's still an 18-year-old human being.

But he's got a giving heart and it makes me proud.

I want to be more like him when I grow up!

There are so many little ways we can brighten people's day.

  • Opening doors for others when we are out running errands

  • Smiling and saying hello when we walk by, even to strangers

  • Stopping to help someone if they look like they are struggling

  • Leaving a quarter in the cart at your local Aldi

  • Shoveling sidewalks if we are physically able

Those are just a few ideas. And they don't cost much.

What a world it would be if we all spent more time doing little things that help other people and brighten their day!

We have the power, not only to influence our own happiness, but also to increase the happiness of those around us.

Simply by doing more things, "Just Because."
