Are We There Yet?

The trail was only a mile to the summit.

But more than 650 feet elevation gain in that short distance.

It challenged our lungs, our hearts and our glutes.

Every so often, we would need to stop and catch our breath.

And check the distance to see how far we had left to hike.

It reminded me a bit of long car rides when my kids were little.

"Are we there yet, Mom?"

"Almost...just be patient."

Ah, yes, patience.

Some days it's easy to have and others, not so much.

Especially when the path is rocky and steep.

We feel the strain in our bodies and the sweat drips down our faces.

It's hard work and it's uncomfortable.

We wish for that part to be over and to be comfortable, enjoying the reward at the top.

But what would life be without the anticipation of the climb?

How much less rewarding would it be if we didn't feel that immense sense of relief and accomplishment when we made it to our destination?

When we finally reached the sign that said 50 yards to the summit, it was an amazing feeling.

We knew that just ahead of us would be the reward that would make it all worth it.

At the top of this particular summit, there were gorgeous, sweeping views of the mountains and valleys.

Reminiscent of the ups and downs of life, and the challenges we face.

And how beautiful it is when we make it through them.

The path to get there is often hard.

It can feel like it takes forever to reach the top.

We might stop and ask ourselves,"Are we there yet?" a hundred times.

But with every step, we get closer.

And eventually, there are signs that we are almost at the summit.

Where the whole world opens up before us.

Reminding us that the effort was worth it.

That we made it.

We are there.
