Two Left Feet

When you are training for a long run, it's important to wear really good socks.
You'd be surprised what a difference it makes!
I've got some that I love.
They compress my feet in exactly the right spots.
And they are so comfortable, with material that goes up the ankle just enough so my shoes don't cause blisters while I'm running.
But there's also something about them that makes me laugh.
Each sock has either an R or an L - for right or left, obviously.
I always forget to match them up properly so most of the time I'm wearing two R's or two L's.
Case in point.
Two days ago, as I was getting ready for my run, I looked down at my feet.
Two L's.
I had to laugh. Two left feet. How appropriate!
I am not the most coordinated person. I drift when I walk, especially if you are on my right side.
Sometimes I trip over the air, or. miss a step on the staircase and have to catch myself.
I rarely exercised when I was young, other than walking or biking because that's the only way I could get around.
I didn't even start running until I was 37. And now, at 49, I've ran more than 300 miiles in the last 3 months and am running my first ever marathon in 4 weeks.
That's pretty good for having two left feet!
Looking down at those socks that day made me smile.
And made me realize that we really can do anything we set our minds to - even if we have a hard time walking straight.
It doesn't have to be running. I tell people that all the time when they ask me how/why I'm doing this.
You can choose anything you enjoy doing. Just move your body.
That's all that matters.
Movement is medicine.
For our bodies and our minds.
I don't say this to make any of you feel bad either. I am grateful every day that my body is healthy enough to propel me forward like this.
But most of us can move more than we do.
It's made all the difference in my life, both physically and mentally.
I credit regular movement with my ability to manage stress and stay (mostly) sane through the turbulence of life.
So join me on this journey.
Get up and make a lap around your house. Go outside and enjoy the fresh air as you walk around the block.
Turn on that YouTube 10 minute video and start your day with a little movement.
It all adds up - and I promise you, if you make it a habit, you'll notice the difference in how you feel.
And I'll be here cheering you on, and moving too - on my two left feet!
