Priorities

The other night I chose to go for a walk instead of sit at the bar and have a drink at my hotel.
And I caught this amazing sunset along the river.
It was a small choice, but it changed the course of my evening.
I talk a lot about choices in this blog.
Because I believe we have the power to shape our lives and the path we are on through the choices we make.
Sometimes those choices are easy.
It's clear which one we should make, based on our morals and values, and even the impact our choice would have on the people around us.
Other times, the choices aren't so easy.
We might have to make a decision where either way the outcome would hurt someone.
Or we have the chance to help someone, but have to choose between two people we love.
Once we've made the choice, it can be easy to second guess ourselves. Or to listen to those around us who are telling us we've done it wrong.
We question whether we've set the right priorities.
The what if's and the if only's creep in, keeping us up at night.
But at the end of the day, our priorities are just that.
Ours.
Not anyone else's.
No one else is living our lives. No one else knows the circumstances driving our choices and priorities.
We shouldn't make them based on what other people think or tell us to do.
Our priorities should be set based on our personal situations and our own beliefs and values.
Some of you might be thinking that sounds awfully selfish, but it's really not.
In this game of life, we only get one chance to live it.
If we aren't prioritizing based on our personal beliefs and values, we're in a world of trouble.
And if we aren't making time for self-care, relaxation, and removing ourselves from the unnecessary drama and chaos, life can be awfully difficult.
The best part is that making choices gets easier once we have our priorities straight.
Every choice we make should align with the priorities we've set.
Because as we make them, our path forward becomes more clear. And in so many ways, easier to travel.
Priorities and choices.
Two of the most important things in life.
How are yours?
