Messages From Mom

"I Love You! Have Fun!"
A simple post-it left on the fridge during Spring Break when my boy was home.
Nearly two months later, it's still there.
A reminder of the million little messages I've sent my boys over the years.
When they were really young, it was notes in their lunchboxes, and cautionary words as I sent them off to the bus stop. Telling them to be careful and to make sure to wear their jackets at recess.
As they got older, the messages evolved into texts and (probably too many) questions when they got home from school.
Now it's precious moments when we FaceTime about random things and I get glimpses of them in their dorm rooms and college apartments.
An evolution in communication.
But no matter the age or method, all of those messages essentially say the same thing.
"Words cannot properly express how much you mean to me."
Being a mom is by far the hardest job on the planet.
You must willingly give up your body, heart and soul to raise another human being.
Sacrifice so much of yourself in the early years to make sure they survive.
And believe me, if you're a mom of boys, you know that can be really hard sometimes!
It's been one of the most challenging and most rewarding experiences of my life.
There are at the same time not enough words, and too many words to describe it.
If you ask my boys, they'll probably say that I talk too much. That my texts are too long. That I can be so random.
But they'll smile when they say it.
And when they need me, they know I'm always here.
I'll respond with an extra long text and all of the advice they need but never asked for.
I'll answer their FaceTime call and give them a tour of the basement so they can see how I re-arranged the furniture, or a trip to the backyard to see the duck eggs beneath the bush.
There will always be a welcome home hug, a day at the movies, or a burrito as big as their head at their favorite restaurant.
All of those things are messages from Mom.
That I'll never stop sending.
Because even though the words and the moments change, the message never really does.
Happy Mother's Day!
