Let Your Silly Show

Most of the pictures that are taken of me are pretty standard poses.
With my kids, with my boyfriend, with my family. Almost always facing the camera.
Trying to look my best, to smile, to make sure my hair looks just right.
I envy other people who take those funny pictures, doing goofy things or spreading their arms wide at the edge of cliffs on their vacations.
I'm not sure what holds me back from taking more pics like that.
Maybe I'm worried that they won't be flattering. Or that I'll be making a funny face or my arms will look fat.
Probably all of the above.
But then again, maybe it would be fun to have more silly pictures of me.
Pictures of the real me when I'm out on adventures.
Hiking and exploring and laughing with my family and friends.
On the last trip I took to Seattle, we visited the Museum of Pop Culture.
It was interesting and colorful and eclectic and made me smile.
And there was this fun backdrop from Super Mario Bros against one of the walls. It took me back to my high school days where we spent hours playing that on our Nintendo.
I decided to do something I normally wouldn't. Be just a little more silly than usual.
I posed as if I was stepping on the bird-turtle, which is what Mario and his brothers had to do to get points (and not get dead) in the game.
And you know what? I love the picture!
It makes me laugh every time I see it.
I'm happy that I let my hair down a bit that day and pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
Maybe I'll do that on a few more of my trips.
Not worry so much about how my hair or my arms look. Not be so concerned about my smile and the lighting.
Just step into the frame and be me.
I love all of the pictures I have where I'm smiling and facing the camera.
But this one is extra special because I can feel the fun I was having when I look at it.
I think that's the difference.
When we allow ourselves to not be so posed and forward-facing, we allow the fun to be seen.
We smile a little wider, relax a little more, feel just a tiny bit more free.
And that's what life is really about.
Striking that balance between fun and responsibility. Between laughter and seriousness.
Let your silly show, my friends.
In your pictures and in your everyday lives.
It so much more fun when you do!
