Be happy.
It was written there clearly on the sidewalk in front of me.
As if it's simply that easy.
To just say it and make it happen.
In a way it is.
But we have to choose it.
Years ago, I used to sweat the little things a lot more.
I would allow them to steal the joy from my day and cloud my vision.
But then something shifted. I began to realize that there are a lot more good things in my days than bad ones.
I just had to open my eyes and see them.
Happiness is what we define it to be.
Think about the moments that make up your life.
Not just the big ones.
But all of the tiny little moments in your days that make you smile.
Here's a short list of some of my favorites:
The first cup of hot coffee in the morning
The sun shining through my window
My cat curled up next to me as I write
Getting a text from my son who's in college
Watching the sunset paint the sky
Talking to my best friend
Sitting on my patio by the fire
An ice cold beer on a hot day
Hugs from my boys where my head barely reaches their shoulder
Cleaning my house to my favorite music
The sounds of teenage laughter from my basement
Finally purging that closet that was just too full
There are hundreds of them.
Most are simple, ordinary moments.
But that's what happiness is.
It's seeing the ordinary moments for what they are.
And realizing that they make life pretty extraordinary.
Our lives don't have to be filled with grandiose events for us to be happy.
We just have to choose to be.
It really is that easy.
