Cruise Control

I have a little bit of a lead foot.

Places to go, people to see, no time to waste.
All of that.
So I'm really grateful for cruise control.
Especially when I'm driving up to LaCrosse to see my son, or to Green Bay for work.
It's actually kind of relaxing.
Set the cruise control, start up an audiobook or a great podcast, and let the miles slide away on a long stretch of highway.
Life is great when the pace is steady and there's no risk of getting pulled over for going too fast.
But let's be real.
A lot of the time the roads aren't clear and the pace is choppy.
The cars in front of us slow down and speed up so we have to keep turning the cruise control on and off.
The guy behind us rides our bumper even when we are already going 10 over the speed limit.
And don't even get me started about winter driving, when conditions are snowy or icy and using cruise control can be downright dangerous.
The roads of life are complicated.
I've learned that we have to be prepared for anything, on any given day.
We need to enjoy it when the roads are clear, the cruise control is activated and we get to where we're going feeling settled and at peace.
And we also need to be ready for the days when the road is rough and the obstacles come at us at every mile marker.
It's a strange blend of peace and frustration, this life we live.
But there is truth in the fact that the bad days help us appreciate the good ones.
Without those bumpy days, the times when we use the cruise control would become routine and boring.
We'd take for granted the blue sky and the clouds and the beautiful sunsets because we've calmly seen them every day.
We would lose that feeling of contentment when everything is going smoothly and life is on track.
I wouldn't want that. Some of the best times in life are when I can sit back and sigh and just feel content with it all.
So, I'm going to continue to be grateful for my cruise control.
Even on the days when I can't use it.
And especially on the days I can.
