The Human Connection

Yesterday, I was getting my house in order for a poker party with family. Running around with my music blaring, tidying up, and making sure that the visible clutter was put away.
At one point, I walked into the kitchen and realized that my sink was overflowing. Bubbles were rising high and starting to take over the countertop.
I had started filling the sink so I could wipe down the counters and clean the microwave.
But then I saw something that had to be put away.
And when I went downstairs I found another job to do, and it spiraled into a bunch of other things that made me forget all about it.
That can happen to me a lot.
I think there's scientific evidence that I am not alone in this, and that most women's brains work this way.
Lord knows there's never a shortage of little things to do.
What gets me though as that this tendency impacts my ability to relax. Even when my house is ready for company, my brain is still running through a list of other things I could be doing. Sitting down and just enjoying my hard work isn't usually an option.
Some days I don't feel like my brain is a very good friend to me.
I know that my family and friends aren't looking at the nooks and crannies of my house, and they certainly won't judge me if they see dirt or open a closet and something falls on them (well unless it hurts!).
They have the same challenge as I do and we often laugh about it.
I think the key to quieting the chaos in my brain is surrounding myself with people I love.
In that situation, I can actually relax. The never-ending list of little tasks to do isn't quite so important.
It doesn't even have to be a full-on poker party, although those are a lot of fun. It can be a phone call or a Facebook chat, or a text that makes me smile.
The human connection trumps the daily grind, every single time.
It would do us all good to remember that more.
So reach out to someone you love today, put that to do list down and make a connection.
Remind yourself of what's really important.
But don't forget to turn off the water in the sink 😉
